Gum treatment
Periodontal disease affects the gums, bone and supporting structures of the teeth and is a major causing factor of premature tooth loss. In essence, these supporting structures are gradually destroyed over time, therefore robbing the teeth of their foundations, causing them to loosen and eventually fall out.
This disease is caused primarily by poor plaque control and smoking, but can also be genetic (it can run in the family).
The first, and most important part in treating this disease, is making sure that your brushing and flossing is immaculate and, of course, to stop smoking. The next step in treatment is to see a periodontist (a gum specialist) who will prescribe deep cleaning of all teeth and gums. This is followed up by regular maintenance appointments with a hygienist and routine examinations by the dentist.
If you are concerned about your gums please do not hesitate to speak to one of our dentists, who can arrange a referral to our in-house periodontist.
